The quantum threat, in short
A large quantum computer running Shor's algorithm could break the elliptic-curve signatures (ECDSA) that protect most blockchain wallets — letting an attacker forge signatures and move funds.
The risk is already present via "harvest-now, decrypt-later": data captured today can be broken later. In 2024 the NIST finalized the first post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards:
